Costa Maya Port
Costa Maya is a small tourist region in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, the only state with Yucatan that has the Caribbean Sea on its shores. This town is near Chetumal (state capital). The area is considered semi virgin, but has been growing rapidly thanks to the construction of cruise pier owned by Mr. Isaac Hamui just over 10 years ago. The Costa Maya includes the villages of Mahahual and Xcalak
Cruises can be easily seen from the village of Mahahual having beaches of soft white sand in which approximately 2000 people live and has a part of the Mesoamerican Reef within walking distance of the beach so the beaches can be considered like a huge swimming pool with a little more than 2 meters deep along the Costa Maya as well as several bars, restaurants and shops. When the cruise ships are in port, the town is busy with passengers of these and also take advantage of the opportunity to meet around the place.
Puerto Costa Maya has a new and modern tourist shopping center. The center has a central plaza with saltwater and freshwater style bars "swim-up". There are several jewelry stores and many small shops selling souvenirs. Usually open only to cruise passengers.
Costa Maya is the closest port access to many of the lesser known Mayan ruins in the Yucatan including Chacchoben, Dzibanche, Kinich-na and Kohunlich. These sites are substantially less than the pyramids excavated best known of Tulum and Coba, north; Chichen Itza and Uxmal in Yucatan.
The port was heavily damaged by Hurricane Dean in August 2007. This included the spring designed to cruise and which took more than 18 months he could recover tourism being the Westerdam cruise Holland America Line the first to return to port the day October 31, 2008 after the impact of hurricane Dean on the day August 21, 2007 destroyed more than 80% in the infrastructure of this important cruise ship port in the south of the State of Quintana Roo.
